• Bordered by the districts of Moyo in the east, Nebbi in the south, and Gulu in the southeast. To the north is the Sudan and in the west is Democratic Republic of Congo.

• It lies at an approximate altitude of between 945m and 1,219m above sea level within a modified equatorial zone. It has heavy rainfall and moderate-to-high temperatures all the year
• The main languages spoken are Swahili and English plus the local languages of Alur, Lugbara, Kakwa and Madi. There are quite religious people with a mixture of Christianity and Islam.

• Ajai game reserve, formerly home to the now extinct white rhino, still attracts tourists.
• Given the lack of essential goods and manufactured products in eastern Congo, Arua is rapidly transforming into a regional commercial center that as well services the Congo. From Congo also comes gold that is traded for money or other goods in Arua.
